Sadsad to see HappyHappy go...

NAS Whiting Field's much-loved Commanding Officer Capt. Rick Sadsad (call sign HappyHappy) was wished farewell with a golf tournament at the base's golf course Monday. Pen Air FCU was there to wish Capt. Sadsad all the best until he returns to the area after his retirement.

Pen Air FCU President and CEO Ron Fields (left) and NAS Whiting Field Executive Officer Cmdr. Lynn Chapman (center) are pictured here with Capt. Sadsad before the tournamnent began.

Of course, there had to be the ceremonial cake cutting, too. Capt. Sadsad's assignment at Whiting lasted two years and he will now travel to the Persian Gulf to be commander at Naval Support Activity in Bahrain.

Credit Scores and how they're scored...

When it comes to credit scores, the way yours is calculated may seem confusing. What's good? What's bad? How is a credit score calculated? Here are some Financial Facts for you:

What's good?
The best credit score to have is 720 or above. If your score is 720, there's really no need to try and raise it because lenders put you in the same category as people with higher scores. At 720, you are viewed as a safe risk and typically receive a loan without problem and at a low interest rate. However, if your score is below 700, it's definitely worth your time to try and raise it.

What's bad?
The average credit score in the United States is approximately 680. Anything below a 680 is considered “sub-prime”, or a bad credit score. However, each of the three major credit bureaus, TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, records your credit score slightly differently because not all lenders report to all three credit bureaus. In general, the higher your credit score, the better, especially if you want to apply for a loan or credit.

Here is how a typical credit score is determined:

Your payment history = 35%: Details regarding payments made on credit cards, retail charge cards, installment loans and mortgages play a part here. HAve your payment been on time? How much do you owe? If you've made late payments, how long ago did those payments occur? If you've got few or no late payments, your score will be improved. Also, recent late payments will hurt your score more than those made years in the past. Having a long history making of payments on time and no missed payments on all credit accounts is one of the most important items lenders look for.

Amount you owe = 30%: Owing a lot on many accounts won't necessarily hurt your score. But, if you are at, or near, your limit on your credit cards and other "revolving credit" accounts, your score will be compromised. This measures the amount you owe relative to the total amount of credit available. Someone closer to maxing out all their credit limits is deemed to be a higher risk of late payments in the future and this can lower their credit score.

Length of your credit history = 15%: In most cases, a credit report containing a list of accounts opened for a long time will help your credit score. The score considers your oldest account and the average age of all accounts. If you're just starting to build your credit history, there's not much you can do to improve your standing in this area over the short term.

You new credit = 10%: Opening several new credit accounts in a short period of time can lower your credit score. Also multiple credit report inquiries can represent a greater risk, but this does not include any requests made by you, an employer or by a lender who does so when sending you an unsolicited, "pre-approved" credit offer. Also, to compensate for rate shopping, the score counts multiple inquiries in any 14-day period as just one inquiry.

Types of credit you're using = 10%: You use of different types of credit - credit cards, retail accounts, finance company loans and mortgage loans - is also considered.

This Jim Bailey student was obviously inspired by our billboard campaign - how about you? We've rolled out our "It" campaign to other advertisements, our brochures, event t-shirts, promotional items and so much more. Be sure to keep your eyes open for some of our "It"s... and remember that at Pen Air FCU, We Get It Done!

What a celebration at Whiting!

Pen Air FCU was out at NAS Whiting Field Saturday to celebrate the base's 66th birthday. The big event: Lonestar in concert - for free! Plus, food, jump houses, static displays, freebies, raffles and so much more!
The Pen Air FCU Marketing team was on site at 7 a.m, gearing up for the event. Conditions were a bit cold and windy at first, but the day warmed up to be quite comfortable.

The Mobile Service Center was on site to provide an ATM for attendees, plus we had a tented booth where we were raffling off a stainless steel barbecue set. We had plenty of freebies on hand - koozies, pencils, pens, balloons for the kids and the very popular expandable flying disc.

If you were at the event, you couldn't miss all the Pen Air FCU banners or the team members in the bright blue "Join It." shirts. Perhaps they greeted you at the gate, stopped by your spot in the crowd or helped you at the booth - they seemed to be everywhere! A huge thanks to the event team: Carol Allen, Crystal Barrett, Debbie Cooper, Jessica Guthrie, Jonathan McIntosh, Jennifer Parker, Beverly Peacock, Steven Thames and Debbie Weagle (left).

Wow! What a night at the fair!

Despite the pouring down rain at times, the Pensacola Interstate Fair was very well-attended, thanks in part to the 75-cent admission fee. Rumor had it that it took an hour to get in to the fairgrounds parking lot at peak entry time!

Pen Air FCU, of course, was there and we had hundreds of people sign up for the $200 cash drawing and spin our prize wheel. In the photo above, Brynn Ammon, Business Development Officer for Pen Air FCU, assisted fair-goers in signing up for the drawing.

If you are planning to go to the fair this year, be sure to stop by the Pen Air FCU booth. We are right next to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office booth as you enter through the building to the fairgrounds - just look for the "Join It." banner! There, people of all ages can enter to win the $200 - we just need your name and phone number. We will only call you if you win. One entry per person per day, please.

As for the prize wheel, children and adults enjoyed spinning it, watching to see what prize they won: Halloween bag, pencil, bookmark or lottery scratcher ticket scratcher. Prizes are subject to change depending on availablity and one prize per day per person, please.
